Do you sing in the shower? How about while driving in the car? Or during worship? Personally, I love to sing but I have a hard time locating the right note or holding a tune. Nevertheless, I sing regularly. It is good for the soul. It expresses emotion and gives voice to the human experience. It also helps to breathe better and release stress. I don’t think it’s possible to undersell the benefits of singing.
The joy of singing is the main reason why we have restarted St. Andrew’s choir post covid. Last year we had a nice gathering of seven to nine people every other week. Under Erin McKibben’s leadership the choir rehearsed and performed some beautiful songs and hymns. Like most of the post-covid activities, the initial stages came in fits and starts and there were some miscommunications, but overall it was a success. In 2022-23 we built a foundation that can be strengthened and improved in 2023-24.
This year starts with a special dinner on August 30th. Anyone who is interested in, curious about, or committed to choir is invited. In addition to sharing a meal, we will go over what worked in 2022-23 and what can be improved upon. Erin will introduce the music pieces for the year and I will share some of the Worship Committee’s plans for the year ahead. Finally, we will pray with and for one another—giving thanks to God for the joy of singing and the blessing of a community to sing with and for.
God’s Word is expressed through scripture, preaching, mission and song! Of all these means, song can be one of the most beautiful and harmonious. I invite everyone to consider sharing the love of God through music; to come and fill the world with the sound of eternal hope!
Blessings,
Pastor Jen
