St. Andrew’s Update–March 6, 2024

Buildings & Grounds

Hello,

I am Porter Spencer, your Elder and Chair of St Andrew’s Buildings and Grounds (B&G) Committee. In the beginning, 1959, a beautiful church and grounds were conceived and built at the large corner property at Auhay and Arroyo, overlooking the majestic Goleta Valley. Shortly thereafter, the Buildings and Grounds Committee was formed to take care of the place.

B&G is a talented group of nine that keep an eye on the place and considers and plans the work needed. With the church now well into its sixth decade, a continuous level of care is needed. Fortunately, we have a very capable Property Manager on site four days a week. Silkie Hur-Stark takes care of many of the smaller fixits either fixing herself or arranging for a contractor.

Several of the larger projects currently under consideration include review and implementation of the reserve study recommendations and the challenge from the 2035 Team: “Create a physical environment that invites spiritual reflection and growth.” A big contributor to the care of the church grounds is our workdays. We have these before major holidays and special occasions as needed when we want to make St Andrew’s really shine. All congregants are invited. It’s a fun event that finishes with a nice lunch. Our next workday is Saturday, March 23, 9 AM to 12:00.

St Andrews is a big, beautiful property with aging buildings, beautiful stained glass windows, flowers, trees, weeds, hay, flat leaky roofs and a congregation of extraordinary Christian souls. B&G meets at 4 pm on the last Thursday of the month and we welcome new members.

Maundy Thursday

Maundy Thursday comes from the Latin mandatum novum, the “new mandate.” Join us on March 28th at 7 pm for a service of communion and music focused on Jesus’ mandate to us to “love one another.”

Saturday, March 23, 9-12

Easter Clean Up Day

The Buildings and Grounds Committee is hosting a Pre-Easter Clean Up day at the Church grounds on Saturday, March 23rd from 9am until noon.  There will be lunch provided afterwards!  Come and help make the grounds beautiful for Easter!

Adult Education

Please join us for Lesson 5 in our series on the New Testament taught by Prof. Bart Ehrman.

For March 10 the lesson is “Mark-Jesus the Suffering Son of God.”

Adult Ed begins at 11:00 on Sunday. Please do not be late!

Adult Education Special Presenter March 17

Kathi King from the Community Environmental Council will come to talk with us about reducing plastics and other ways to help our local environment. Kathi manages the waste reduction program, including the successful Rethink the Drink bottled water reduction program in local schools and parks. In 2021, she began teaching the UC Climate Stewards course through a partnership with University of California, a certification program that works to build a committed corps of local climate activists.

Slam the Scam!

National Slam the Scan Day is Thursday, March 7th, 2024.  Be aware and alert if you get a call from someone caliming to be from a Government Agency and demanding your personal information.  The office has handouts that we can give out if you want more information on how to protect yourself.  Visit ssa.gov/scam for more information and/or drop by the office to ask for a handout with instructions on how to protect yourself.
