Membership Committee Update
Dear Friends,
We hope this little update finds you well! The membership committee at church has been at work planning events and strategies for Lent and Spring. We strive to create events that help you to easily invite your friends, neighbors and coworkers to enjoy our community, and learn about our values and commitment to Jesus Christ.
As we head into Lent, we have been thinking about sacrifice and what role it plays in our lives. Many of us have tried, with varying degrees of success, to give up something we are fond of (coffee, chocolate, wine) or habits that don’t reflect our Christian values (gossip) for Lent. Ultimately, these sacrifices help to connect us to Jesus and deepen our appreciation for His ultimate sacrifice.
We have hit on something we hope will check two boxes by encouraging us to be invitational, while giving up a convenience that does not serve our environment. Let’s give up a portion of our plastic use to serve God’s kingdom! For decades, we have been taught that plastic use is convenient. Businesses and advertisers want us to embrace single use items and plastic goods in order to sell us more and more consumable items. Everything from Ziplock bags to a wide array of plastic gadgets are marketed to us as convenient. We want to explore together whether plastic is more convenient or just a marketing ploy; and is forgoing it’s use even that large of a sacrifice?
The events we have designed are simple, fun, and a great way to invite friends to get to know us. Will you and a neighbor join us for a farmer’s market walk to get your shopping done without plastic clamshells? How about a beach cleanup day with some of your coworkers, followed by Happy Hour nibbles at the Boathouse restaurant? Learn a new skill with us when we create beeswax wraps. The adult education committee has scheduled Kathy King, the Director of Climate Education and Leadership at the Community Environment Council to speak with us. She manages their waste reduction program, including the successful Rethink the Drink bottled water reduction program in local schools and parks. At the end of the season, we’ll check in and share what we have learned at an adult education round table discussion. We have plenty of tips and tricks to share!
We hope to see you and your friends at these events and pray you have a thoughtful, fruitful and meaningful Lenten season.
