St. Andrew’s Update–September 11, 2024

Digital Presence Team

I am once again joining Session. I did two terms of Session and then I was asked to be the Clerk. The Clerk has many responsibilities. So, for the last two years I still went to monthly Session meetings. I take minutes, distribute reports, keep the historical records up to date, etc.… This year I decided to also be a member of Session. The difference is I am once again a voting member.

Each member of Session moderates a committee. I will head up Digital Presence Team. When the DPT first began in 2020 it was during the pandemic. Kirk Grier and I met in his driveway with our cell phones discussing possibilities. This committee has come a very long way.

Our team is made up of all ages (I am on the older side) and varying tech abilities (I am on the not so tech savvy side) But together this team is working and has already done wonders to get the virtual word out that St. Andrews is an amazing community.

The Digital Presence Team takes care of all the audio/visual on our Campus. Along with internet capabilities, social media and all on line activities. They have done an abundance of work allowing us to live stream services and adult ed classes. We have a You Tube Channel, allowing public access to our services at any time. With the help of Lila and now our social media intern, Will, we have active Facebook and Instagram accounts. These accounts bring our activities to a larger population.

I grew up with rotary phones and learned how to do bookkeeping with a pencil and paper. This is a “New Age” and we are all communicating differently. I have a very large learning curve. But, with help from the DPT committee and Gods guiding hand I am looking forward to a very productive and informative year!

Adult Education is Back

Join us for Adult Education in the Window Room from 11-12. For the next three Sundays Pastor Jen will lead a discussion based on the book God After Einstein. In this book, author John Haught seeks to answer the question “what does the God of Jesus mean to us if we think in depth about the (Einsteinian) Big Bang Universe.”

Sowing the Seeds of Peace

Weekend in the Word

On September 20 and 21, First Presbyterian Church of Santa Barbara is pleased to welcome Rev. Bruce Reyes-Chow for “Weekend in the Word.” Rev. Reyes-Chow’s presentation will be based on his latest book, “Everything Good about God Is True: Choosing Faith.” Friday, September 20, from 6-8 pm and Saturday, September 21, 9-noon at
First Presbyterian Church, 21 E Constance Avenue, Santa Barbara.

As we find ourselves in the middle of August, the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP) 2024 Out of the Darkness Walk is almost hear! This year’s event takes place at Goleta Beach Park on September 28, in recognition of Suicide Prevention Month. Behavioral Wellness is excited to be returning as one of the event sponsors. For those who have joined before, you know how very powerful this community event is. Together we are stronger.

There is no cost to sign up to walk! Whether you join Team Behavioral Wellness, walk independently, or walk with another team, be sure to register! It is FREE to walk, but registration must occur. Crafty Quilters Needed

St. Andrew’s is now collecting plastics that cannot be recycled at home. Bring in your plastic film labeled #2 or #4 and turn them into residential flooring. To learn more about Planet Protectors, click here. Here are examples of what we can take:

NEW: Morning Meditation

Starting Thursday, September 12th from 10-11, the Rev. Janet Ewart will lead a weekly morning mediation. Each week a new way to pray will be introduced, such as Lectio Divina, artwork prayer, and haiku. All are welcome.

Transition House Cooking Party

Join us for a cooking party at St. Andrew’s with Ann Padden-Rubin. We will prepare a meal for 60 to be served to children and their families at Transition House. Transition House helps unsheltered families find permanent homes. Sign ups on the patio after worship.

Once the meal is complete, come and learn how to set up and serve at Transition House with Pastor Jen. We promise it will be the highlight of your week!
