News from St. Andrew's - July 15, 2020

Dear St. Andrew's Community,

As we know, the rise in COVID cases has led to a roll-back of some of the reopenings for various sectors, including faith communities.  Obviously, our current worship practice will continue as they have since March and I am grateful we can continue to do this in a way that is safe for everyone. Meanwhile, the work of the church continues, and here are a few highlights:

-- Our Health Advisory Task Force (Tom, Suzanne, Carole, Ariel, Ann and I) have been reviewing the various government guidelines to determine how to safely operate in our current limited manner, as well as with possible future worship.  This week you should be receiving an email survey which describes what resuming worship would be like, and asking for your perspective on various options.  The group also created a more detailed document of protocols and practices which the session is currently reviewing.  We will share that document with you when it is approved.

-- The partnership between St. Andrew's and Living Faith Center to continue the "Feeding Our Neighbors" program is becoming a reality, and the first distribution is scheduled for this Saturday. This will be a more limited and focused effort, but will once again will be ensuring that families that need food in our community will be receiving it.

-- You may remember that St. Andrew's SAIL program made a generous $50,000 investment to support the work of the local Neighborhood Clinic.  Tom and I were on a Zoom meeting earlier today to hear an update on how the Clinic is doing during the COVID era.  I was impressed with what I heard, and encouraged to know local and government support has allowed the Clinic to adapt to the new needs and challenges.  The Clinic served 21,789 people in the just completed fiscal year and 5,700 were children.  The many services that help our neighbors receive quality care, including behavioral health support, make it an inspiring story.  You should know that your resources are part of that success and service.

Blessings upon all of us as we continue to experience the "COVID Summer of 2020."

Take a look during Coffee Hour...

The lead-in graphic to this email is a painting by Bev Walters.  She has shared some of the work she has been doing over the last few months.  A small collection of that work will be available for us to preview during this week's Coffee Hour.

There is a path to resuming worship in our sanctuary...

Watch for an email in the near future with a survey concerning your thoughts about in-person gathering at St. Andrew's.  Please respond when you receive the survey.

Uppity Women of the Bible

"Uppity Women of the Bible" presents scholarship, humor and fresh insights on some of the most colorful women from the Bible.

Uppity Women of the Bible is a four volume DVD-based series from Living the Questions featuring Hebrew Bible professor Dr. Lisa Wolfe.  This lively commentary encompasses four major books focusing on women in the Hebrew Bible and Apocrypha.  Each section in the volume addresses the biblical text in detail and draws connections from the world of ancient audiences to that of present-day readers.  Wolfe's research is motivated by the usual inquiries of biblical scholarship, as well as the questions raised by the many church Bible study groups she has taught.  Combining careful scholarship with humor and fresh insights, Dr. Wolfe presents the opportunity for lively and thoughtful discussions of Ruth, The Song of Songs, Judith and Esther.  The Syllabus for the first volume, Ruth, is here.
