News from St. Andrew's - July 22, 2020

Dear St. Andrew's Community,

The session met last night to deal with a variety of important items:

1. Scott presented the results of the email survey sent out last week.  Here are some key findings:

a) After reviewing the 21-point summary of the protocols we need to follow to resume in-person worship, only 6% said they would come to worship given those restrictions.

b) 14% said they would try the outdoor worship format with the needed restrictions.

c) 81% reported they are viewing weekly our current video option.

d) 83% indicated they feel “connected” to one another in light of the limitations.

e) The session was grateful for the information gathered and discussed ways to try to close gaps and address future options.

2. A comprehensive policy for building use during our current limited operations and future “reopening” was formally adopted, with an understanding that these would be modified as conditions evolve and permit.

3. To support the Preschool, approval was granted to forgo a number of routine Preschool expenses, such as paying workman’s compensation insurance.  This action will help balance the Preschool’s budget as it hopes to reopen in a limited capacity.

4. Everyone was encouraged to hear that the new, focused, once-a-month food distribution program distributed 160 boxes of fresh produce on July 18th.

5. A congregational meeting to elect new officers was set for August 30; how to do that as inclusively as possible when in-person meeting is not permitted is being researched.

6. The Pastor Nominating Committee reported it is now meeting two nights a week to pursue its goal of finding the next installed pastor.

As you can see, while the buildings are quiet there is a great deal of faithful work going on behind the scenes as the current and future faithful life of the church is being supported and advanced.

It is certainly a pleasure to work with such a committed group of leaders.

-- Steve

Take A Seat...

On a "Sheltered" Bench

We express thanks to Lee Thompson for construction of the roof shelter over the "First Responders" bench.  This SAIL project upgrade provides attractive protection of the bench, as well as much appreciated shade and comfort to those using the bench.

THANKS, LEE!

ADULT STUDY:

Uppity Women of the Bible

"Uppity Women of the Bible" presents scholarship, humor and fresh insights on some of the most colorful women from the Bible.

Uppity Women of the Bible is a four volume DVD-based series from Living the Questions featuring Hebrew Bible professor Dr. Lisa Wolfe.  This lively commentary encompasses four major books focusing on women in the Hebrew Bible and Apocrypha.  Each section in the volume addresses the biblical text in detail and draws connections from the world of ancient audiences to that of present-day readers.  Wolfe's research is motivated by the usual inquiries of biblical scholarship, as well as the questions raised by the many church Bible study groups she has taught.  Combining careful scholarship with humor and fresh insights, Dr. Wolfe presents the opportunity for lively and thoughtful discussions of Ruth, The Song of Songs, Judith and Esther.  The Syllabus for the first volume, Ruth, is here.

The Adult Education Committee will begin this series on July 12, 2020. Please join us on Zoom at 11 AM on Sundays!
